Coach Ulrey graduated from New Palestine High School in New Palestine, Ind. in 2006. Over four years, he hit .412 and helped lead the Dragons in 2004 to a 3A State Championship and a top 50 rank nationally. He was a three-time All-County, two-time All-Conference and two-time Indy All-East player. Ulrey was nominated as a 2006 Indiana All-State player and selected to the All-Rawlings Team in 2006. He was selected in the 33rd round as an outfielder in the 2006 Major League Baseball Draft by the Chicago White Sox. He opted out of signing due to an injury and pursued college baseball and his academics.
Ulrey played two years at NJCAA Division I Lincoln Trail College in Robinson, Ill. Hitting over .300 his freshman and sophomore seasons, he led the team with 10 home runs including two grand slams in the sectional and region tournament. Ulrey was nominated to the sophomore All-Star game. After graduating with an associate degree, he then transferred after two years and signed with NCAA Division I Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois. Ulrey helped lead the Panthers to an Ohio Valley Conference Championship in 2009 and a top 25 national ranking in NCAA Division I Baseball before being sidelined with an elbow injury. Ulrey then finished his college playing career at NCAA Division II University of Indianapolis. He finished his senior season with seven home runs (2nd on team) and a .347 average (2nd on team). Also earning honorable mention All-Conference honors, Ulrey helped lead the Greyhounds to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
After finishing up his collegiate playing career Ulrey coached at Beech Grove High School (2010-12) in Indiana. His first year with the Hornets as a varsity assistant coach and hitting coach, he put together a solid offense and had multiple hitters finish the season hitting over a .400 batting average. Though the team finished under .500 as an assistant varsity coach, he made progress with their baseball program. His second year with the Hornets he was offered the Head Coaching position and became the youngest head coach in Indiana at 22 years old. It didn't take long for the Hornets to buy into his coaching philosophy, and he turned that program around in one year. He helped lead the Hornets to their first winning season (15-13) since 2004 and first Sectional Championship since 2005. Ulrey has also coached six years in competitive summer travel baseball programs and also owns the The Swing Factory INDY in Indianapolis and The Yard Sports Complex in Greenfield, Indiana. He was the former President and Co-Founder of the Indiana Astros Baseball & Softball from 2013-2016 before going on his own with the Midwest Astros Baseball & Softball Travel Organization. The Midwest Astros offers numerous opportunities throughout the Midwest for players to reach the next level of play.
After his two years of coaching high school baseball from 2010-2012 he was offered a collegiate baseball coaching job at NJCAA DII Kankakee Community College in Kankakee, Illinois. From 2013-2015 Ulrey served as the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator for the KCC Cavaliers. He helped lead the hitters in numerous top 25 national rankings in offensive catagories for the team. In his time at Kankakee, He helped move on numerous players to the NCAA and NAIA level to further their playing career after junior college. Ulrey was an assistant coach at NAIA Marian University in 2015. 2019 Ulrey was a varsity assistant coach at Mt. Vernon (Fortville) High School, Head coach at Warren Central High Schoo from 2021-2023. Currently in his first year as head coach at Knightstown High School.
Ulrey brings a lot of knowledge of the game of baseball to his clients he trains and players he coaches. He has trained 1000+ baseball and softball athletes from the ages of 7 years old to college aged players all over the Midwest. His passion for teaching, instructing and coaching individuals with the game of baseball and softball is his most prized possession. His expertise in training baseball/softball is hitting, although he works with multiple clients with overall instruction such as pitching, fielding and catching. Ulrey has a great eye for hitters when evaluating and breaking down swings, video analysis and the physical and mental approach of a hitter.
Coach Ulrey has been around quality baseball training, coaching and playing. He has trained and coached many athletes that have moved on to play collegiate ball. He has also had the privilege to coach, play and compete with and against top prospect players, all-state players, professional players and many more talented individuals.
